Palazzo Colonna is one of the largest and oldest private palaces in Rome. Its construction began in the 14th century at the behest of the Colonna family, who has resided there permanently for eight centuries. The Colonna family dates back to the 12th century and comes from the town of Colonna, near Rome, from which it takes its name.
