It is one of the oldest churches in the city and one of the first dedicated to the Madonna, already documented in 931, when a document mentions Bishop Rambaldo as the tenant of land and a house prope ecclesiam Sancti Marie Majoris. Among the various frescoes, some are attributed to Jacopo di Cione and Mariotto di Nardo. From the 17th century onwards, there are works by Poccetti, Cigoli, Pier Dandini, Passignano, Volterrano, Matteo Rosselli and Vincenzo Meucci.
